Gardeners Castelnau Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Castelnau is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening work and maintaining a safe working environment across all sites where we operate.
Policy Objectives
Our main health and safety objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and property damage, and to continually improve our safety performance. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing effective control measures, and ensuring that everyone working with us understands their responsibilities.
We recognise that gardening work involves the use of machinery, tools, chemicals and manual handling activities that can present hazards if not properly controlled. We therefore take a proactive approach to planning and supervising our work.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Castelnau has overall responsibility for ensuring that this Health and Safety Policy is implemented, monitored and reviewed. Management will provide appropriate resources, information, instruction and training to enable safe working practices.
Management responsibilities include:
Ensuring that suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for gardening and grounds maintenance tasks.
Providing safe equipment and maintaining it in good working order.
Establishing safe systems of work for tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work, planting, landscaping and waste handling.
Ensuring that employees and contractors are competent to perform their duties safely.
Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, and taking action to prevent recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Employees must cooperate with management in implementing this policy and must not interfere with or misuse anything provided for their protection.
Employee responsibilities include:
Following all safety instructions, procedures and training provided.
Using machinery, tools, vehicles and equipment only for their intended purpose and in a safe manner.
Wearing the personal protective equipment provided, such as gloves, safety boots, eye protection, hearing protection and high-visibility clothing, as required for each task.
Reporting hazards, defects, accidents, incidents and near misses to their supervisor without delay.
Maintaining good housekeeping standards on site, including safe storage of tools and materials.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting any gardening or grounds maintenance work, Gardeners Castelnau will assess the risks associated with the task, the environment and any specific site conditions. Risk assessments will identify appropriate control measures, which may include the selection of suitable equipment, the use of protective clothing and the planning of work to avoid unnecessary risks.
Safe working practices will be established for common gardening activities, including but not limited to lawn mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, pruning, planting, weed control, pressure washing, soil preparation and the use of powered equipment. Where work at height is required, such as pruning or trimming tall hedges, appropriate access equipment and methods will be used, and staff will be instructed in safe techniques.
Use of Machinery, Tools and Vehicles
All machinery, tools and vehicles used by Gardeners Castelnau will be selected for suitability and maintained in a safe condition. Pre-use checks will be carried out where appropriate, and any defects reported immediately so that equipment can be removed from service until repaired.
Only authorised and trained personnel may operate powered machinery and vehicles such as mowers, trimmers, blowers and company vehicles. Guards and safety devices will not be removed or bypassed. Equipment will be stored, transported and refuelled safely to minimise risk to staff and the public.
Chemicals and Environmental Protection
Where gardening work involves the use of chemicals, such as fertilisers or plant protection products, Gardeners Castelnau will follow all safety guidance and product instructions. Chemicals will be handled, stored, mixed and applied by trained personnel, using appropriate protective equipment.
We will take care to protect the local environment, including soil, plants, wildlife and watercourses, by using environmentally responsible methods wherever possible and preventing contamination arising from our activities.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, bending and repetitive movements. Gardeners Castelnau will assess manual handling risks and take steps to reduce them, for example by using mechanical aids, planning loads and encouraging team lifting where appropriate.
Employees will receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and the importance of pacing work to reduce strain. We will encourage the early reporting of discomfort or symptoms related to manual handling so that adjustments can be made.
Public Safety and Site Security
When working in gardens, communal areas or other locations accessible to the public, Gardeners Castelnau will plan work to minimise risks to clients, visitors and passers-by. Where necessary, barriers, cones or signs will be used to separate work areas and to warn of hazards such as moving machinery, slippery surfaces or falling debris.
Tools and materials will be stored safely during and after work. Sharp tools, chemicals and powered equipment will not be left unattended in accessible areas. Vehicles will be parked responsibly to avoid obstructing roads, driveways or pathways.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Castelnau will provide appropriate health and safety training to all employees in relation to their roles. This may include induction training, task-specific instruction, refresher training and toolbox talks on relevant topics.
Supervisors will monitor working practices to ensure that safety procedures are followed and that any unsafe behaviour or conditions are addressed promptly. Information about hazards and control measures will be communicated clearly to all affected persons.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses, however minor, must be reported to management as soon as possible. Records will be kept and reviewed to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Where necessary, corrective action will be taken.
Emergency arrangements will be in place for situations such as fire, serious injury, chemical spills or extreme weather. Employees will be made aware of these procedures and of their roles in an emergency, including how to summon assistance.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure that it remains effective and relevant to the nature and scale of our gardening activities. Reviews will consider changes in legislation, industry best practice, company operations and any lessons learned from incidents.
Gardeners Castelnau is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. We welcome feedback from employees, clients and other stakeholders on how we can enhance the safety of our services and working methods.
By following this policy, Gardeners Castelnau aims to deliver high-quality gardening and grounds maintenance services while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved.
